Cold-Weather Dog Walking Safety: What Pet Parents Should Know

Winter brings chilly air, icy sidewalks, and unique challenges for your dog’s comfort. Whether you walk your pup yourself or use a professional dog walking service, safety always comes first. Here are our top tips for keeping your pup safe during the winter months.

1. Watch Out for Salted Sidewalks

Ice-melting salts can irritate paws. Booties, paw balm, and post-walk rinses help keep paws healthy. We’re a big fan of Musher’s Secret balm for dogs paws, you can find it at most pet stores in Lake County, IL or online.

2. Adjust Walk Length on Extremely Cold Days

Even thick-coated dogs can get chilly quickly. A trained dog walker knows how to tailor walk length to your dog’s needs. If you see signs of your dog being too cold, try and end the walk immediately. Keep an eye out for your dog picking up their paws from the ground or visible shaking.

3. Choose Weather-Appropriate Gear

A warm coat, reflective harness, or lighted collar can help your dog stay cozy and visible. There are plenty of options out there for cold weather-appropriate gear for dog walking, we’re a big fan of Ruffwear and their cold-weather line.

4. Increase Visibility in Low Light

With shorter winter days, reflective gear and lights is essential. Many collars and jackets for your dog have reflective paneling. We also recommend investing in a collar that has a light for your dog to help keep you and them visible.

5. Avoid Icy or Frozen Water Areas

Frozen ponds and lakes are unpredictable—sticking to safe walking paths is best. Dogs can easily cut their paws on frozen ice or water.

Regular dog walking supports your dog’s physical and mental health year-round but during winter, smart safety steps make all the difference.
